Scientists had strong statistical evidence as early as the 50s re: smoking


and cancer. But industry scientists were able to play on (a) the inherent uncertainty in science and statistics, and (b) the public's lack of knowledge to that effect in order to muddy the waters long enough that it delayed public action by fifty years or more.

BTW, some of the same scientists that worked to obfuscate the connection between smoking and cancer are now working in the anti-climate change field.
